A some of you may have read, I wrote a post on lucid dreaming a few weeks ago and I have been trying it out every few nights to see what I could possibly experience. I wanted one last night to try it out before I wrote about it.
When I started, I really felt like I should have been experiencing something like that of the movie Inception, but that wasn’t the case for me. Maybe for some people, they’re able to get on that level, but I’m still a novice when it comes to this practice.
It’s also an interesting concept to even fathom, the fact that you can be conscious and aware even when you’re dreaming. If you’d like to have a better understanding of what lucid dreaming is, you can watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1i6A7t6L2g
What I like about it, is that it helps people who experience high anxiety and nightmares, because this can be debilitating, despite popular belief. Bringing mindful awareness to all aspects of your life helps aid in this process. That is why I started with an awareness technique called reality checking. You basically just take notice of what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how you got there for a short period of time. This happens a few times a day, and it helps keep your mind in focus.
I also meditated for a few minutes each day I wanted to try lucid dreaming again. This helps most in lowering your anxiety and stress levels, all the while examining thoughts and bringing awareness to the present moment. Taking these steps are key to your journey in lucid dreaming. You can also try a few techniques just before you fall asleep like recalling a past dream or repeating mantra to yourself similar to counting sheep. Some people do these naturally. Have you ever woken up from a dream and you try to fall back asleep to continue it? I do sometimes, and unbeknownst to me, that is already a partially lucid dream. The next step is remembering in the dream, that you are dreaming.
While it’s true that practice makes perfect, I have only done this a few times and I haven’t necessarily gotten the results I expected. Nonetheless, following these steps did help me recall my dreams better and have a more relaxed sleep cycle. Maybe a few more tries, and I’ll actually be able to tell you what I accomplish; but until then, I’ll have another hot cup of blue lotus tea waiting for me tonight in hopes of a more enhanced lucid dreaming state.
