- Where did you grow up and what was it like?
I was born and raised in Santa Barbara, CA - considered the American Riviera! It’s a very interesting place - while my school wasn’t very diverse, my parents both worked at the University so our family-friend circle consisted of people from all over the world. Our weekends were spent picnicing on the beach or hiking on the mountains and my parents loved to host. They’re phenomenal cooks and we traveled overseas every year.
- How did you end up doing what you do now?
Before founding SILK + SONDER, I worked as a software engineer and product manager for Goldman Sachs, Stitch Fix, The Muse, and Fueled. I had the fortunate experience of working alongside founders at The Muse which gave me a preview of what it’s like to build a company from the ground up. Despite my accolades, I always found myself anxious, immersed in my own self-doubt and Imposter Syndrome. I noticed a huge pattern amongst my female friends and colleagues - the confidence gap was real and here to stay unless we act quickly. Self-care and mental wellness begins with clarity around what we aspire to be and do - so SILK + SONDER was born to help modern women reflect, rejuvenate, and achieve in order to catalyze positive change and fulfillment in their lives.
- What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness to me means “productive alone time”: time to reflect on what makes me tick, what’s coming in the way, and what I can do to add an extra umph to make myself feel good. It could be as simple as lighting a candle or placing a sheet mask. But it really boils down to mental wellness - having clarity on your dreams and the confidence to pursue them.
- Do you have a daily ritual or practice/s that have made a difference in your wellbeing?
Yes. Every morning, I wake up and spend 15-30 minutes journaling. It forces me to not worry about everything I need to do and really set an intention for the day. I also look at my Co-Star app for fun and use my SILK + SONDER to plan out the top things I need to get done for the day. In the evenings, I spend 15 minutes reading a book or watching a show and set my phone aside. This disconnection from the digital world is what helps me stay mentally well. I’m bombarded with emails and texts every day so it’s a good reminder to know that the world can fully function without my attention for a few hours.
- What is the most transformative book you have read?
Essentialism by Greg McKeown. I loved this book because I was raised thinking that the more I do, the higher the reward will be. Instead, this book teaches the importance to prioritize my strengths and interests and delegate the rest. It’s an art I’m still learning to master, but it’s rewarding to know that with focused, minimal input, there can be greater, more fruitful output.
- If you find out you only had a week left to live, how would you spend it?
I’d spend it at a gorgeous house in Lake Tahoe with my family and close friends. We’d bring photo albums, board games, and delicious food - no phones and no laptops. We’d then recount memories, go wakeboarding on the lake, and enjoy nature and all its beauty.
- How about some goals and dreams you currently have?
My dream is to empower millions of women to chase after their dreams - this could be in the form of devoting more attention to a favorite hobby, quitting the unfulfilling job to write a book, or launching a new business idea. Too many times we second guess ourselves and as a result, the world is missing out. I imagine a world where if we collectively worked on solving the problems we care about, the world would be a far better place.
