Hey Jill, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do

We are a floral design house specializing in large scale installations and known for pushing the envelope. We’re constantly inspired by our surroundings and live for collaborating with others! There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the look on a client's face when you reveal what you've been working on...

So exciting! The work you guys produce is inspiring to say the least. Where are you from and where do you call home now?

Pretty much always been in San Diego & we are still here! We’ve made a home out in the countryside & are loving it.

Lovely! Where did your love for flowers come from or what first drew you to flowers?

Sadly, it was a personal tragedy that turned me to flowers. I needed an outlet and escape from my corporate job… I stumbled onto flowers and haven’t been able to put them down since. There’s just something so addicting about creating beauty with nature and then the rewarding aftermath of seeing all the smiles and joy on your client’s faces. It’s been so fulfilling and I never realized I needed that kind of work in my life.

Flowers truly do offer an escape from the real world when we need it. I am excited to know what you are currently working on!

Right now we are heading to Joshua Tree for a shootout. This is under our other business Modern Love Event (http://modernloveevent.com). It’s basically a styled shoot on steroids for photographers to come capture. We curate a top notch vendor team and really go for it. I love these kinds of projects because I get to flower for myself and create something from my never ending “bucket list.”

Wow! That sounds amazing. What are some inspiring words you love and live by?

Because I feel like I was “saved” from my boring corporate job, I am always telling people that feel stuck or hate their jobs that, “we only have one life to live” and it’s crazy to work as much and as hard as we do and hate it. Oftentimes you’re with your co-workers more than your families. You do not have to do anything. Changing careers and starting your own business is scary but it can be done, you just have to want it enough.

Agreed! What’s a daily ritual that’s made an impact in your life?

Coffee in bed. Some might say it’s a bad idea but I like to wake up early but slowwww. It puts me in a good mood. My other daily ritual would be running outside. We’ve got amazing trails surrounding us and I find inspiration every time.

What are you drinking and eating currently?

Drinking too much coffee and in the evenings tea to warm myself up. I’m still munching on leftover Halloween candy but that is on the verge of being embarrassing so I’m commuting to tossing it all this weekend ;)

Oh my! I think we all have some leftover Halloween candy lying around somewhere. What brings you pure joy?

Our family. We have two boys that crack me up all the time. My husband’s family is super close to us as well and I love that our kids are growing up together. My mom and her husband are also in San Diego and then my sister and her family are in Austin which is the best place to visit.

Who is someone that had the most impact in your life for the better?

My Dad. He definitely lived for the now. He worked really hard, he fought for things he believed in and he always told his daughters to not sweat the small stuff. He was proud of me for where I’d taken my corporate career and towards the need of of his life he knew I was going to need a major change and while it was all foreign to him, (the idea of me doing floral design for a living) I know he’d be proud of what I’ve made for myself and my family.

Where do you find inspiration or what have you found super inspiring lately?

I run a lot and am always inspired by nature. I also love following designers overseas. I’m a huge fan of what the Aussie’s are doing!

Quick fire Q’s

Favorite affirmation?
  • I am enough
Favorite book?
  • I can’t pick one! I recently read Where the Crawdads Sing, it was SO good and my favorite for now ;)
Favorite food to cook?
  • I don’t cook, like at all. But I’m lucky my husband does (we would starve without him) & I’ll say my favorite thing HE makes is his vegetarian enchilada skillet. It’s insane!
Favorite city?
  • It has changed a lot. For years it was San Francisco and Seattle but now I think my favorite city is where we live, Sunny San Diego!
Favorite movie?
  • Love Actually
What is one advice you would tell your “younger self”?
  • That none of what I worried about or was consumed by really mattered. I definitely was caught up in things that were superficial and in the end, none of it meant a thing! I would have been happier listening to that old saying - “don’t sweat the small stuff.”
